UPDATE 6/26/09

Well I have just about all my parts in for my Titan swap. PRG Titan UCA's and 2.5 Rads will be here Monday but, unfortunately, I will not. Have to leave Sun for Buffalo to start knocking out last minute wedding stuff. Will be coming back to VA mid July-ish for my VCU orientation and will be doing the work then, along w/ my M226. That's right! Looks like I will be taking BPotter's rear axle off of his hands for him and swapping out my C200 for some locked goodness!

UPDATE 7/21/09

Titan swapped! PRG UCA's, 2.5 Radflo's w/ 600# Eibach springs, stock Titan LCA's, and 2" wheel spacers in the rear to match the wider front.

5   General Board / Is one step paint or basecoat/clearcoat best?  on: Sep 25th, 2009, 12:40am
Started by builder77sDad | Post by builder77sDad
I will be painting my son's 1983 CJ-7 myself. The hood, doors, grill, windshield frame and fenders are all stripped to the metal. The body tub is unpainted aluminum. Ethan had the frame dipped in zinc and then he coated it with POR-15 and then the POR topcoat.

I plan to use zinc phosphate on the steel first. Then I plan to spray on an etching primer (which can be used with the aluminum also).

I have been told that an epoxy primer would be the best next step. Your opinion/experience?

My main question concerns whether to paint it (green metallic) using a basecoat and clearcoat system, or whether I should just use a one-step urethane without clearcoat. What would be the easiest to repair myself if I need to do some repainting after getting scratched or scraped? If I get minor paint damage what would be the easiest to repair by buffing?

Thanks for your advice!
