Busy Weekend in April Poor Boys 4WD Club
Saturday April 18th proved to be a very busy day for Poor Boys 4WD Club, actually the entire weekend was busy. As it turned out Saturday April 18th was the March of Dimes Walk in the Fredericksburg Area, which Poor Boys have participated with for the past 20 years. And as our luck would have it, Saturday April 18th was the 3rd Annual GW Trail Clean Up. This meant that our club members had to split the tasks at hand. Friday evening we all met at Old Mill Park and divvied up the walk signs. Five groups each took a part of the walk and stapled up the walk direction signs. Thanks to Jen, Sean, Kris, Chrisy, Artie, DJ, Billy Steve, Donny and Trish the good turn out made the task go fast. Afterwards a group headed to the mountains to make camp for the clean up weekend. Saturday morning the March of Dimes group, Kris, Chrisy, DJ, Artie, and Mike. met at Old Mill Park to help during the walk. Delivering supplies to the check points, monitoring the walk route, and bring back the occasional stranded walker. Afterwards they had the pleasure of taking down the signs we posted the evening before. We contributed to total of 52 man hours between Friday and Saturday. Very early Saturday morning the 2nd half of the Trail Clean Group headed to the mountains. They stopped to make the 9:00 am meet and disseminate meeting and then headed over the mountain to meet up with those who camped. Together we tackled our assignment and pulled 15 bags of trash, 5 full size sofas, 4 chairs, a love seat, several buckets, coolers, and grills from the road side of Brushy Fork.. The clean up meant the eviction of several mice families from what they thought was the perfect sofa home. The flies and other bugs were not as bad this year. There were however still plenty of deer carcasses. The clean up is very fulfilling work, but it’s the knowledge that we are cleaning up after people who should have never put that trash there in the first place that makes it so depressing. We need to do more to educate people not to litter and dump. We contributed 42 man hours to the Saturday clean up. Special thanks to Steve, Billy, Troy, Sean, Donny and Trish for making the trip.
